I’m so glad to be part of the 2013 Debut Author’s Bash Tour! My stop includes a giveaway/interview with the fabulous Chelsea Pitcher, author of THE S-WORD!
So how was Comic-Con? What was your favourite part about it, and tell us about the panel you were on.
Comic Con was a blast! It was my first time going, so it was a little overwhelming because the whole convention is very chaotic. There were so many people there, and so many things to see! When I first arrived, on Friday, I went to the Simon and Schuster booth in the Exhibitor Hall (which was filled with exhibits for TV shows, comic books, video games and novels). There I met my editor for the first time, and we went out for coffee and talked! After that, I returned to the S&S booth and did a book signing for about an hour. It was a lot of fun, and I met some wonderful people. There was even a line!
Then on Sunday, I had my “What’s Hot in YA Fiction” panel. The panel was moderated by Nathan Bransford, and I got to sit beside Taherah Mafi, Rachel Cohn, Veronica Rossi, Rachel Hawkins, Rainbow Rowell, Ransom Riggs and Mark Frost! Pretty soon, the room was filled up with people, and for the first half hour, Nathan asked us questions about writing and publishing. We talked about the growing phenomenon of adults reading YA, what it takes to create a believable fantasy world, and why there’s been an influx of sci-fi stories lately. After that, people got to line up and ask us more questions!
When the panel was finished, we headed over to a bigger hall and did a book signing together. I got to talk with people who’d already heard about THE S-WORD, including a librarian from Nevada who I’d become acquainted with through Goodreads. All in all, it was a fabulous time!
2. I heard you recently got a new book deal! Can you tell us anything about the series you’ll be writing?
Absolutely! I recently got a two-book deal with Flux for “The Faerie Revolutions” duology. The first book, IMMORTAL SACRIFICE, is about an actual faerie princess who’s determined to overthrow her corrupt mother and bring equality to faerie kind. But to do this, she’ll need the help of her mother’s sworn enemy, the Bright Queen, and the only way to gain the Bright Queen’s favor is to give her an offering: a human.
So the princess travels to the mortal world in search of the perfect human offering. There she meets seventeen-year-old Taylor, who thinks she’s a human runaway, and offers to help her start a new life. The princess believes she can use Taylor’s kindness to her advantage, but she never plans on falling for him, or becoming entangled in his world…
3. If you could have dinner with any three literary characters, who would they be, and where would this take place?
Morgan le Fay from THE MISTS OF AVALON, Puck from A MIDSUMMER NIGHT’S DREAM, and Eilonwy from THE CHRONICLES OF PRYDAIN! We’d all have dinner on a deserted island, because the most exciting things always seem to happen when you’re stranded on a deserted island.
4. What was the book that you loved to read over and over growing up? or that inspired you to become a writer?
I loved, loved, loved the BUNNICULA series growing up. My mom used to read it to me when I was a kid, and I continued to reread the stories as I got older. I think reading about a band of misfit animals solving (seemingly) paranormal mysteries definitely influenced my love of amateur detective stories, as well as my love of stories that walk the line between fantasy and realism. In fact, now that you mention it, it may be time to reread the series again!
5. Current movie you’re loving, tv show you’re watching, and music album you’re listening to??
I actually haven’t watched a movie in a while, but I am SO excited for the sequel to the Hunger Games movie, Catching Fire. As far as TV shows go, I’m currently re-watching the first season of New Girl (love that show), and The Heist by Macklemore and Ryan Lewis has been on repeat in my CD player for weeks.
Thanks so much for having me!!
Chelsea is also being kind enough to give away a signed copy of THE S-WORD! you can enter by leaving a comment on this post. One lucky winner will be contacted by the first week in October! US Residents only!
